How to LOVE Newport in February

Winter is brutal. But in Newport it doesn’t have to be. Especially during February when love is in the air. The spectacular snowy-lined streets and hot chocolate, skating and cozy dinners, theater dates and shopping dates are some of the things why people love staying here. Looking for something to do? Here are a few more of our favorite things for any of your loving interests! The best events, in our opinion, aren’t even Valentine’s Day themed so breathe a sigh of relief single peeps!

First off, A MUST GO:

February is Winterfest month! 30th Annual Newport Winter Festival, Touted as “New England’s Largest Winter Extravaganza” is from From February 18-25. It’s the most talked about winter event in Newport featuring a week of winter-themed activities, concerts, cook-offs, street entertainment, and more. Buy a bracelet and receive free or discounted admission to restaurants, shops, and events. Most events are family friendly, and all of them promise to keep you warm and smiling in this chilly month.

Featuring over 150 events, the Festival offers a unique winter experience combining food, festivities, music, and fun for all ages. Melt away your winter blues! The Ice Bar at Pineapples on the Bay (free hot chocolate with your winterfest bracelet!), pasta-making at Vanderbilt Grace, the Great Chili Cookoff, Beach Polo, and live comedy! Love the Bay? You can even love it in the winter. Newport Seal Watch Tour with Save The Bay seal tours and nature cruises prove that summer isn’t the only time to enjoy the Bay. Join them aboard one of  their education vessels as educators motor through historic Newport Harbor and take in 360º views of seals resting on Citing Rock off of Rose Island and the Newport Bridge. It’s a true educational view of Newport’s winter marine visitors and the habitat they love. Love food? Especially burgers? In search for the perfect one?!  The Newport Burger Bender is a simple “best burger” contest taking place Friday, February 16th through Sunday, February 25th, 2018 at participating restaurants throughout Newport and Bristol counties. Check out all the contenders so far and get your judge pants on. Try one. Try some. Try them all. Then vote for your favorite!

Another event at the end of February is the Illuminated Garden. It’s a free and magical, walk through the trails of Ballard Park to experience a spectacle of lights in outstanding and unique formations. The display will showcase February 22, 23, and 24 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM and is a lovely and fun way to spend an hour “off the beaten path.” Bring a flashlight! Do you enjoy history? You will die for Colonial Career Fair: A Living History Event. Did you know Newport was the fifth wealthiest city in colonial America. In the mid-18th century what jobs were people doing that helped the city become so successful? On Saturday, February 24, 2018 from 10am-1pm, join the Newport Historical Society to learn how people made their living. In an evening the ultimate history buffs will love, costumed interpreters in a “colonial career fair” will represent different occupations that would have been present in this seaport. The Jobs range from “tradespeople like a printer, milliner and leather worker to merchants such as a toy seller and store owner, along with food service jobs such as a baker, brewer, coffeehouse owner and tavern keeper” according to Newport history website!
