How to See Newport… on Two Hybrid Wheels

Just in time for Newport’s newly acquired bike-friendly status comes our own personal invitation for guests to “Bike Newport” on a hybrid bike! What is a hybrid bike? The best of both worlds! On a hybrid you can choose to ride unassisted or, with a flick of a switch, your battery-powered, green, two-wheeled traveling companion turns electric giving you a break and a no-pressure outdoor experience. Since Newport boasts some of the most spectacular ocean views in New England and many attractions along its glimmering shoreline, what better way to spend your time here than hugging the sea on your very own traffic-free transportation. This month we’re offering a special package that lets you enjoy an 8-hour hybrid rental, a picnic lunch, and a tour of your choice of two historic Newport properties.

If you’re looking for some tips on where take your journey, we’re happy to report custom bike routes are readily available courtesy of Bike Newport, a growing organization focused on building the biking community in Newport and beyond. We recommend the “Ocean Drive” scenic route which gives you a chance to enjoy the best views and most popular attractions.

Along the 10 mile Ocean Drive route stop for a drink at Castle Hill, enjoy a picnic at Brenton Point State Park, or take a guided tour of the historic Fort Adams. Once you reach the lantern lined Bellevue Avenue, stop for a while to admire the architecture of the Preservation Society mansions. Finally, make your way to the cliff walk and take in the view on one of their many park benches overlooking Easton’s Beach.

Just next door Middletown offers comparable water views and plenty of back roads to test out your pedal power (or your hybrid’s battery). Follow Bike Newport’s “Middletown Beach Route” along the opulent Indian Avenue toward Greenvale Vineyards for a quick sip in their rustic tasting room. Next make sure to stop at Sweetberry Farm, an oasis of fresh flowers, home-made ice-cream and lunches, and pick-your-own produce.  Not far down the road is Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge with scenic views of Sachuest (second) Beach and well-preserved walking trails.
